PROCESS

The textile businesses can be small scale industries where only one tailor makes the clothes, medium scale where 4-6 workers make clothes and large scale where 12-20 workers work on bulk orders from brands.

WORKER

This industry has both male and female workers. The females usually work from home or within their shops. It is very common to find female tailors rather than male in the upfront shops.

CONSULTING

The Indian state of Maharashtra and Gujarat produces cotton on a large scale. The fabrication and dyeing of the cotton happens in Dharavi itself but in a small quantity. The major cotton fabric is imported from Gujarat while the synthetic fabric is imported from China.

PRODUCTS

Pants, shirts, tops, salwar and nightgowns are the products majorly produced here. Industries like embroidery and sequences for Indian wear are also made.

IDEATION

Depending on the industry, the worker's salary varies between Rs.5000 - Rs. 12,000 per month. Many of the bigger brands order products to be made in bulk where one deal earn as much as Rs. 2-3 crores on an average.

PRESENT SCENARIO

This industry is growing slowly since many international brands place orders due to cheap labor. The large scale factories like denim and fabric mills are located in the industrial parts while the small tailor shops usually run by ladies are located in the residential side of Dharavi.
